Are there other economy models being designed?

We usually don't ask why our economy is how it is. Economy models and new ideas have been added to the system, to improve it. But, are the proposals of different systems of economy? Are there things that could replace inflation or other common mechanisms of economy? Are there people designing new models or improving the current one?
