Can someone tell me why we can’t afford universal healthcare?

We offer tax breaks and subsidies to businesses and corporations for providing health insurance to their employees. The amount of money given or forgone would pay for every americans health insurance twice over. We spend a higher percentage of GDP on "health care" than all but 1 or 2 of the top nations in the world. All of which provide universal health care. We also pay staggeringly more privately than any of those countries. So clearly the money is there. What am I missing?
